Google's Nexus One smartphone may be heading to Verizon Wireless within a few short weeks, if the latest reports prove accurate.

Offering a version compatible with the No. 1 U.S. mobile carrier could prove to be a boon for Google, which has received praise for the HTC-manufactured Nexus One's power and design, but which has also thus far made the device available only through its Web site. That marketing choice is seen as one of the key reasons that the Nexus One may not be selling as well as expected, according to some observers.

A new report claims that Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC has begun to ship a CDMA-ready version of the Nexus One phone to Google, which could mean the search giant is ready to bring its Android phone to Verizon Wireless.

The article first ran in the Chinese-language newspaper Economic Daily News and was picked up by the English-language, Taiwan-based Web site DigiTimes, which said the Nexus One is on its way to Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) for launch later this month, or in April at the latest.
